End of the XP Era

14 Apr 2009

On the 14th April Microsoft will drop it's mainstream support for its Windows XP editions.

With Windows XP still the preferred operating system for many organistaions this news will leave some of them wondering whats next
.

Microsoft have a product lifecycle that they follow, this includes their product such as Windows XP, remaining in mainstream support for 5 years.  Windows XP has had this mainstream support status for a further two and a half years and so it comes as no surprise as Microsoft announce this news.

So what does it mean to all those businesses and home users that have Microsoft XP on their machine?

Support for this operating system has not simply been taken away, the product in all its varieties has now gone into extended support and this means the Operating System will still be issued with Security hotfixes as it is now, and these continue to be distributed via the Automatic Updates services that XP employs.  What it does mean however is that non-security related hotfixes will only be supplied for a fee.

Windows XP will remain in Extended Support until 8th April 2014.

Microsoft are allowing for the time being the sale of machines pre-installed with the XP operating system but a specific when they say that the support of this will be provided by the Original Equipment Mabnufacturer (OEM) and not Microsoft
